Optimum for Elementary Math (Grades 3, 4,
& 5) was developed in response to the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, which includes a stronger accountability regarding student progress. States were given the task of developing their own set of standards for the subjects of math, reading, and science at each grade level. Beginning in 2005-2006, tests must be administered each year in grades 3 through 8 in math and reading to assess every student's progress toward the standards.
Optimum for Elementary Math is designed to assist teachers and parents in reviewing grade appropriate math topics, while helping to assess areas that need additional intervention. The standards addressed in this program combine several different states' recommendations along with standards suggested by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Standards include Number & Operations, Measurement, Geometry, Algebra & Patterns and Data Analysis & Probability. |
